In January, 2018, the SRS Family Foundation launched a new music series, Bodhi Beats, to showcase the talents of musicians with South Asian roots who are creating innovative music and provide them with opportunities and venues to share their art.
The local community gathered together for an evening of Indian Fusion Music to support these young musicians. Among the performers was Shilpa Ananth, a singer with roots in Indian classical music blending Jazz, Soul and R&B influences, Tamil Nadu-raised and New York-born critically-acclaimed vocalist Ganavya and Karavika, a music group led by violinist Trina Basu & cellist Amali Premawardhana, who draw from the rich classical & folk traditions of India, Europe and America.
Ticket sales from the event benefitted A Free Bird, a Non-profit organization in Brooklyn, New York dedicated to uplifting children battling cancer and other chronic illnesses through the therapeutic arts, and Sakhi for South Asian Women, an organization that promotes women's rights and provides community programming, including for survivors of violence.
Many thanks to the DAG New York for generously hosting the event.
